A foray into wedding photography

Posted on September 9, 2010

This summer I shot photos at a wedding. I wasn’t there for the whole day, I just turned up to do some photos of the couple and their family as they just wanted some nice photos without having to fork out hundreds or thousands of pounds for a wedding photographer for their whole day. It was still good experience for me and the group shots were definitely challenging. These are just a couple of photos of the bride and groom.

While weddings aren’t the lifelong route I want to head in with my photography, I don’t think they are awful and some lovely imagery can be captured at them and I wouldn’t mind doing more. If you’re getting married in 2011 and don’t want to spend a grand on a photographer, I am looking to fill my summer 2011 calendar so feel free to get in touch!

Let me know what you think of the photos, it’s an area that is very new to me and feedback is always appreciated.

I may not be blogging much over the next few days/possibly a week. I am moving back up to uni either tomorrow or Saturday and don’t know when I will have internet, plus I’ll be quite distracted with freshers, so if it’s a little quiet around here that is why!

Canon 550d

I acquired a canon 550d this week. It’s not much of a step up from my 400d but I need the bigger resolution for uni work and I’m really keen to move into video and do fashion work as moving image as well as stills. Hopefully it’ll make me think differently about my photography and experiences in both will just challenge and improve me. As much as I’d love to step up to the 5d mark II or even the 7d, both are a little out of my budget unfortunately. I could only afford this thanks to a £500 bursary from my university.

Here are some shots I did in my kitchen and of my dog just after getting the camera out of the box, all with the 50mm 1.8 lens.

Ivory Lace Photoshoot

Posted on August 30, 2010

Yesterday was spent shooting for a client. Now, despite the client being my friend (who may injure me for the photo above) it was still a scary prospect as it is for her business and I want to produce what she wants. There’s less room for screwing up or changing my mind! On the plus side, there was no awkwardness of meeting and working with a new new client. She knew my work, how I worked and we had text each other ideas and spent an evening going through what she wanted.

The shoot was for a wedding, prom and eveningwear shop in Essex called Ivory Lace and the main brief was to take light, elegant photos of the dresses and acessories. For the hats and fascinators, I came up with the idea of doing pop-art style portraits for them with bold makeup and backgrounds.

I am definitely in favour of the hat photos. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get much editing done because like the fool I am, I left my glasses at the shop! But here’s a little sneak peek:

Make-up by Lauren Scales, fascinator available from Ivory Lace

The photo above is of my good friend Louise who was modelling the size 12+ dresses and doing some hats. Isn’t her hair absolutely amazing? This idea was definitely a success. Shot with a light with diffuser box on camera right (courtesy of the lovely Chloe Bowman) and a speedlite on camera aimed at a reflector on camera left, next to the model.

As for the shoot, I still struggle with posing models and I really should create a ‘pose book’ full of cuttings of model poses I like from editorials. More photos from this shoot soon!
