Product Review: Max Factor Lip Tint

Posted on March 12, 2011

Firstly let me apologise for the lack of posts this week! I have been silly busy with uni deadlines, the D&AD deadline and taking on board two freelance projects – exciting and scary at the same time!

I thought while I had some time I’d write a little review of the Max Factor Lipfinity Lip Tint Pen (£7.99) I acquired recently with some Boots advantage points I had. It is currently cheaper in Superdrug, on offer for £5.99 but I didn’t want to spend any money. I’m quite wary of make up products in felt tip pen form and have had a bad experience with felt tip pen eyeliner which was useful about once but the nib got ruined quickly and then it dried out after about two uses.

The nib is a little hard and rough and the colour doesn’t really apply evenly and time has to be taken to go over the lips and fill in the colour. A sweep with the side of the nib helps apply the colour faster but still needs to be gone over with the tip to get a strong, matte colour. The tip is great for getting a really clean edge to the lips but the quality of the tip seems to already be deteriorating after only a week. The lip tint itself tastes lovely but is quite sticky until it dries.

Once it is properly applied I do love how bold and matte the colour is.

I did a LOT of swatches on my hand first and waited to see how they faded. I’ve got to say I really did like pink princess and plum but I already have lipsticks in similar shades and wanted something less heavy for the day. I settled on ‘berry burst’ as it was a nice pale colour that’d would be a nice tint.

l-r: Natural lips, just applied, and then filled in a bit more with lip balm on top

This is the swatch for berry burst:

Different, no? It applies completely differently on the lips! Now while I still like the colour it is on my lips, it’s not exactly what I chose. I purposely bought a light shade as I already have dark lipsticks so I do consider this to be a bit of a wasted purchase.

An even bigger downside of this lip tint is that it doesn’t seem to last long at all. Within two hours the colour had completely gone except for a few traces of it in the corners of my mouth. Thankfully it doesn’t leave tide marks around the lips though.

As for the felt tip aspect, it hasn’t dried out yet but it definitely doesn’t apply as easily as I did when I first acquired it which is why I left the review a while to write.

Honestly, I would not reccommend this product. This has only been my second time trying lip tint but I’d much rather stick with lipstick which lasts ages if applied right. £7.99 is not worth something that just doesn’t even last the length of a uni lecture! That money would be much better spent donating to the Japan Tsunami Appeal.

Ladies, lip tint or lipstick?
